Alternate Nostril Breathing

Alternate Nostril Breathing helps to balance and harmonise the functioning of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. It soothes the nervous system and clams the mind.

Anuloma Viloma

Technique

  1. Sit comfortably. You are going to use your thumb and forth finger, so curl your forefinger and middle finger into your palm. 
  2. Place your thumb on the right side of your nose and close your right nostril. Inhale through your left nostril.
  3. Release your right nostril and exhale through both nostrils.
  4. Place your forth finger on your left nostril and close your left nostril. Inhale through your right nostril.
  5. Release your left nostril and exhale through both nostrils.

Make the breath equal length for the inhalation and exhalation. Repeat 5 – 20 times.

Practise this technique before moving on to the more advanced Nadhi Sodhana breathing, which can aid detoxification of the organs such as the liver.

Technique

  1. Use the same hand position as above.
  2. Place your thumb on the right side of your nose and close your right nostril. Inhale through your left nostril.
  3. Exhale through your left nostril.
  4. Open your right nostril and close off your left nostril. Inhale through your right nostril.
  5. Exhale through your right nostril
  6. Continue swapping sides. Inhaling and exhaling on one side then the other.
  7. Repeat 5 – 20 times.

Stop if any discomfort arises.
