The Breath of Fire is a rapid inhale and exhale through both nostrils, just like sniffing. It is a detoxifying breath to help cleanse the body. Its name comes from the purifying heat generated in the nostrils by the fast movement of the air in and out.
Sit on the floor with crossed legs. If it is more comfortable you can kneel or sit on a chair. Lengthen your spine and slide your shoulders down away from your ears. Rest your hands on your knees.
Begin breathing rapidly in and out through your nose. On the out breath pull your tummy in (belly button towards the spine).
It may feel strange at first. Stick with it, it will become easier. Start with 30 seconds, building up to 1 – 3 minutes.
If you start to feel dizzy, stop and rest.
When you have finished take time to breath normally and let your body resettle into its natural rhythm.
This breathing also helps to build strength in the deep abdominal muscles.
